(Editor's note... Anny Divya is currently the world's youngest female B777 Captain)
I am Captain Anny Divya, commander on the Boeing 777. Given that the first time I entered an aircraft was to learn how to fly it, honestly it has been quite a journey. When I was 10 years old I started dreaming of becoming a pilot. I remember as a child I used to look up at the sky and wanted to fly like a bird. It was my mother who made me think big. In my small town of Vijaywada in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, there was no aviation school; in fact, no one I knew had any knowledge on how to become a pilot. There were many hurdles in my journey like financial issues, languages barriers, cultural challenges, etc.
Opposition from people to send a girl to an unknown profession with a high training fee made my parents think before they decided on something, but through sheer grit and determination I made them feel I could do it and it helped me to overcome rest of the barriers. Today I thank my parents who encouraged me and also my teachers who identified my capabilities and helped me to improve my strengths. With all this my journey has just begun because sky has no limits and the sky is my home now.
I cannot complete my story without mentioning Female Aviators Sticking Together. F.A.S.T. is the platform where all the females get inspired and get help to reach heights; heights as in their goals and also their heights to be in the air as pilot. I feel glad for making all the females stick together through F.A.S.T. and to inspire many more!
