Amelia has lived on an Air Force base her whole life. Both her dad and I are pilots so she has been around airplanes and other pilots since she was born. She has always been very independent, strong-willed and brave and I love that she has grown up loving airplanes as much as her dad and I!
I've been lucky enough to take her into the simulator with me to "fly the airplane" from mommy's lap and to take her to the flight line to see and touch the airplanes we fly. One of my favorite things to do is to talk to her preschool class about being a pilot. I always get asked, "Can girls and boys BOTH be pilots?" And of course, I'm happy to show all the little girls, and boys, that YES girls can be pilots, too!
This year I started a tradition in which I ask Amelia what she wants to be when she grows up, expecting her to have a different answer each year. This year, on her first day of pre-K, she said, "I want to be a pilot like you, mommy!" Well I can't think of anything that would make me prouder!
I am so happy that there are organizations like Female Aviators Sticking Together that will be there for her as she grows up! Even if she decides being a pilot isn't for her, I know that F.A.S.T. will be supporting and nurturing of all the future women aviators to help them reach their goals!
