Female Aviators Sticking Together (F.A.S.T.) was created in 2015 by five female airline pilots who recognized the need and desire for female pilots to connect with one another. F.A.S.T. was originally formed on Facebook as a secret group to keep the confidentiality of its members and to uphold its integrity as a safe place of friendship, unity, growth, encouragement and an overall haven for the ladies in the group.
Within a week of starting their Facebook group, Female Aviators Sticking Together was over 1000 women strong, and within 2 weeks, that number had doubled. These were impressive numbers considering that F.A.S.T. was a secret group not found via a Facebook search, and was solely known through word of mouth by licensed female pilots. Andrea Nicole Ratfield, President of Female Aviators Sticking Together recalls that time. “It was absolutely crazy and eye-opening at the same time,” she stated. “I remember being up to 2 or 3 o’clock every morning trying to verify and approve ladies into F.A.S.T. We (the F.A.S.T. Founders) couldn’t believe what was happening. We knew the demand was there, but we had no idea the depths of our idea.”
With its rapid growth, the F.A.S.T. founders saw the opportunity for something bigger and quickly turned Female Aviators Sticking Together into a non-profit. In 2016, F.A.S.T. furthered its reach by advancing the status of Female Aviators Sticking Together into a 501(c)(3) non-profit with the sole purpose of distributing scholarships to its members to advance their personal aviation dreams and career goals. Currently, F.A.S.T. is more than 8500 ladies strong, all with at least their Private Pilots License, and continues to grow daily.
Female Aviators Sticking Together is now a global network that touches almost every country where women fly aircraft. F.A.S.T. encompasses every aspect of the aviation industry, including military, general aviation, medevac, bush pilots, race classics, corporate and the airlines. The Ladies of F.A.S.T. include the majority of airlines throughout the world and the military ladies throughout the US, as well as those still stationed abroad. They have numerous members who were a part of first "unmanned" flights where an all-female crew made headlines. F.A.S.T. has members who fly to offshore oil fields, monitor Alaska's pipelines, compete in aerobatics, and are a part of global weather observations. F.A.S.T. has the Ladies of the Fly Pink initiative from Qantas who have donated thousands of dollars to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. They have many Ladies with successful aviation businesses like The Abingdon Company, Parihug, Base Turn and One Plane Jane. F.A.S.T. also has ladies who are simply beginning their aviation journeys, enjoying the wondrous skies and the adventures they behold.
In their short 2-year existence, Female Aviators Sticking Together has fostered relationships between women who have never met one another, and F.A.S.T. meet-ups occur all over the world by its members. Women find refuge in F.A.S.T. and enjoy the sisterhood of being able to talk about anything without being judged. They love having a place to discuss the challenges of being a female in a male-dominated industry and appreciate the similarities and differences they find in one another. The ladies of F.A.S.T. help each other find jobs, celebrate those who have passed their checkrides, walk beside those who are struggling in their aviation endeavors, and comfort those who are facing challenges in their personal lives or aviation journeys and simply need a hug.
Most importantly, Female Aviators Sticking Together fosters the growth of the next generation of female pilots, supporting and guiding them in their careers. In 2017, F.A.S.T. awarded almost $10,000 in aviation scholarships to aspiring female pilots, and will continue their belief of giving back and paying it forward by offering yearly scholarships to its members. The officers of Female Aviators Sticking Together are grateful, humbled and honored to be helping and encouraging Ladies in all aspects of their aviation ventures, and are incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to give to so many women who would otherwise not be able to imagine or afford their aviation goals and dreams. As one F.A.S.T. member stated, “The touch of Female Aviators Sticking Together is pretty much everywhere now… We love our group!”
